About Moorunga

Built by a team. Backed by data. Bred with intent.

Established in 2018 by John and Sue Matthies on the Moorunga property near Dromana, the latest chapter in a breeding story that began in 1974.

Fifty years in the making

Fifty years of looking at cattle, learning what works in the paddock and building herds that hold together.

Moorunga Angus is the latest chapter in a breeding story that began with John founding Looragoo Murray Grey Stud in 1974.

The Foundation

Built with a focus on quality

The original stud females came through the Anvil and Stoney Point dispersal sales - rare opportunities to draw from the heart of established programs and secure cows that simply weren't available on the open market.

That foundation has been carefully strengthened with proven genetics from Texas Angus, Banquet Angus and Little Meadows Angus, complemented by sires sourced from Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada. Embryo transfer from our top donor cows accelerates the influence of our best maternal lines through the herd.

The Expansion

Lima Park - proof our genetics work

In August 2025 we purchased Lima Park, a 3,200-acre property near Swanpool in Victoria's north-east. It gives Moorunga a working commercial Angus herd of 600 breeders run on the same ground, in the same system, under the same management style as the stud.

Lima Park is also home to our new sale facility, with our annual on-property bull sale moving there from September 2026. Dromana remains the home base for the stud herd, and we continue to deliver bulls free of charge within 150km of either property.

The Team

Moorunga is not one person’s program

We back our people, we listen to our clients, and we know good cattle are the product of good teams.

The Approach

We share what we know and show what we do

Every breeding decision at Moorunga is measured, recorded and benchmarked. We combine phenotype assessment with genomic testing, EBVs, structural scoring and the commercial performance data coming off Lima Park.

  • Sire verification - standard, not optional
  • Genetic-defect testing on every sale bull
  • Independent semen testing before sale day
  • Our cattle, data and paddocks open to clients and agents
Every bull that leaves Moorunga is bred on purpose, proven by data and built to perform.
